Child Care Subsidy (CCS): A Simple Guide for Families
The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is financial assistance provided by the Australian Government to help eligible families with the cost of childcare.
Rather than receiving the subsidy directly, CCS is generally paid to your childcare provider and deducted from your fees. You then pay the remaining out-of-pocket amount, often referred to as your “gap fee”.
How much you receive depends on your individual circumstances.

If you're new to childcare, you may have heard of Child Care Subsidy (CCS) but aren't quite sure how it works or what it means for your family's childcare fees.

What is the Child Care Subsidy?
The Child Care Subsidy (CCS) is financial assistance from the Australian Government that helps eligible families with the cost of approved childcare.
Rather than paying the full childcare fee, eligible families receive a subsidy that is paid directly to their childcare provider. The remaining amount is your out-of-pocket cost, or “gap fee”.
How much you receive depends on your family's individual circumstances.
How much CCS could my family receive?
Your CCS percentage is primarily based on your combined family income.
Eligible families can receive a standard CCS rate of up to 90%, with the percentage gradually reducing as family income increases.
If you have more than one young child attending childcare, you may also be eligible for a higher CCS rate for your second and younger children, depending on your circumstances.
Your individual CCS entitlement is calculated by Services Australia, so every family's subsidy can be different.
How many days of childcare can CCS cover?
There has been an important change to childcare subsidies in Australia.
Since January 2026, the previous activity test has been replaced by the 3 Day Guarantee.
This means eligible families can receive at least 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight — equivalent to around three days per week.
Some families may be eligible for up to 100 hours of subsidised care per fortnight, depending on their circumstances.
The 3 Day Guarantee makes accessing subsidised early learning simpler for many Australian families.
What does this mean for your childcare fees?
It's important to remember that CCS doesn't necessarily cover a percentage of your entire childcare bill.
The Government also applies an hourly rate cap when calculating your subsidy.
Your final out-of-pocket cost can therefore depend on:
Your family's income
Your CCS percentage
How many hours your child attends
Your eligible subsidised hours
Your childcare service's fees
The Government's CCS hourly rate cap
This is why two families attending the same centre can have different out-of-pocket costs.

The best way to understand your individual childcare costs is to complete a Child Care Subsidy assessment through Services Australia.
Once you know your CCS percentage and eligible hours, you'll have a much clearer idea of what your childcare fees may look like after the subsidy has been applied.
